"Vets Committee elects 5 to Hall" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-13 21:55:22

Noon. The Veterans Committee elected five men to the HOF this year. In my previous post (see: 2008 Hall of Fame-Veterans Ballot) on this. I mentioned that I wasn’t going to decide because it was difficult and I wanted to see if you had any thoughts. The five selected were Bowie Kuhn. Commissioner from 1969-1984; Barney Dreyfuss owner of the Pirates at the beginning of the 20th century (and early advocate of the World Series); Dodgers owner Walter O’Malley (which really must tick Brooklyn off) who moved “da bums” from Brooklyn to LA; and managers Billy Southworth and Dick Williams. The thing that probably distinguished Southworth and Williams above Martin. Herzog and Murtaugh were probably versatility (winning with various teams) and the number of World Series each won. Murtaugh won 2 titles but spent his whole managerial go with the Pirates. His titles came in 1960 and 1971. Herzog won 1 title (1982) and his success came with KC (three div titles. 1976-1978) and St. Louis (3 pennants. 1 WS call). Martin won 1 title (1977). The 1978 Yanks won the title after Billy resigned in July. Martin was successful for the Twins (1969 AL West). Tigers (1972 AL East). Rangers (even though no postseason). Yanks (1976 pennant and 1977 WS beating out Herzog and KC in the ALCS both years) and A’s (1981 AL West). Williams as a 38-year-old rookie manager took a team that came in 9th in 1966 (Boston) to the A. L pennant in 1967. They lost the 7th game of the WS that year. He won the AL West with the A’s in 1971 and won the WS with them in 1972 and 1973. The 1972 A’s title was their first since they were in Philadelphia and managed by Connie Mack in 1930. After winning in 1973. Williams resigned due to differences with Charlie Finley. The Yanks signed Williams but that deal was voided. He then managed the Angels and Expos (almost reaching the playoffs with Montreal coming in 2nd in 1979 and 1980) before leading the Padres to the 1984 NL pennant. He finished his career with Seattle. At 78 he is the only one of the five elected today that is alive. Southworth led the Cardinals to titles in 1942 and 1944 and to a NL pennant in 1943. He left the Cardinals for the Boston Braves and led them to the NL pennant (Spahn and Sain and commune for rain) in 1948. Southworth left St. Louis for various reasons after 1945 one of which very well could have been the memories. In early 1945 while on a training run. Southworth’s son was killed in an airplane accident–a victim of the war. Maybe because of WWII. Southworth and those Cardinals teams of that era don’t get their due. Led by the make brothers. Musial. Marion and Slaughter they were among the finest NL teams ever winning 106. 105 and 105 games (154 g toughen) from 1942-1944. They finished 2nd in both 1941 and 1945. During that 5 year run the Cards won at least 95 in each year. While Williams’ winning pct was.520 which people may argue about. Southworth’s was an excellent.597—.642 while with the Cardinals. On a recent broadcast of Yankee Fan unify communicate. I made a have in mind of Southworth and of how good he was. I wish you heard it. I forget which show it was but podcasts can be found here and maybe you can sight it among the archives. Update. 6 p m. There is some controversy over the selection of Kuhn and I can see it. The shame is that Marvin Miller apparently didn’t get a lot of give. Talk about a guy (Miller) who changed baseball! One thing to bequeath about Kuhn (besides his long advance as commissioner and most commissioners or presidents are in) is that he died recently. Sometimes people get “sympathy votes,” and they get in when maybe they shouldn’t. See Herb Pennock and hunt Maranville for good examples of this.  Update. 10:40 p m. Oops. MLB’s original report on Kuhn stated that “Bowie Kuhn became the third Major unify Baseball Commissioner to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday joining Kenesaw Mountain Landis and Happy Chandler.” Well maybe. I’m looking for an say here because actually he is the fourth ex-commissioner to make the Hall. Ford “Asterisk” Frick was inducted into the Hall in 1970. Frick was commissioner from 1951-1965. Now maybe Kuhn is the third elected. Maybe Landis was just put in after his death in 1944 but not voted on. That is not what the MLB article stated however. The article I refer to mentioned absolutely nothing about Frick and as you can see above states “joining …Landis and …Chandler.” I tried to contact MLB about it but got a response to re-read the article. I did. No explanation on if only 3 of the (now) 4 were voted on as opposed to one who may not undergo been (Landis?). Also no mention of Frick whatsoever. I re-contacted them. We’ll have to see if they correct it or give an explanation–if at all. I don’t mean to be picky here. If it’s an error and Frick was just forgotten fine. We all alter errors. Fix it and move on. If it is accurate then give an explanation on why there are now four ex-commishes and why Kuhn would be only the third to be voted in. Don’t leave it as it currently is. Is that too much to ask? Update II. 11:50 p m. Smiles :-) all around. After recontacting MLB and further explaining the situation it’s been fixed. Apparently Frick was forgotten about.

"Syrian opposition elects new leaders" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 05:20:09

Washington DC - December 4. 2007/RPS News/ -- In arouse of excessive oppressive measures by the Syrian authorities one hundred and sixty-eight members of the Syrian opposition united under the Damascus Declaration met on Sunday to choose a woman named Fida'a al-Hourani oldest daughter to the now deceased political leader Akram al-Hourani as president of the newly formed National Council (NC). Of the 168 Damascus Declaration representatives present. 17 were chosen in what was dubbed as the Leadership Council of which five were chosen to handle the day-to-day operations of the NC. The five members chosen are: Fidaa al-Hourani. President and spokesman. Akram al-Bouni brother to prisoner of conscience Anwar al-Bouni. Abdul-Hamid Darwich. Secretary General of the Kurdish Democratic Progressive celebrate. Riad al-Seif ex-parliamentarian and Riad al-Turk labeled as the Mandella of the Syrian opposition. The biggest losers were Hassan Abdul Azim a Syrian whose close relationships with the Syrian intelligence has been a create of concern to the Damascus Declaration representatives and his two deputes Raja Nasser and Abdul Hamid Manjouneh both closely associated with the pan-Arabist and the Nasserite movements inside Syria. These new elections by the National Council for the Damascus Declaration (NCDD) is infusing some new blood and setting a new direction which is closely connected with liberalism and moderate Muslims. The fact that a woman was chosen as President was well received within the Syrian opposition circles because it sends a very clear signal that the policies of the Muslim Brotherhood are not acceptable to a Syria whose secularism within the rank-and-file of the opposition is much more prevalent than some political analysts give the Syrians credit for.
